Task 2488 words

In some countries, it is illegal for companies to reject job applicants for their age. Is this a positive or negative development?

Some businesses today implement strict policies regarding the minimum age of job candidates to ensure eligibility for vacancies. While I believe this limitation is crucial in most cases to prevent child labor exploitation and to allow adequate mental and physical development, exceptions should be considered for senior candidates to help them achieve financial stability and a greater sense of purpose in life.

The primary reason for such restrictions is to prevent the exploitation of children, who might otherwise face unfair treatment, underpayment, or abuse in the workplace. Young individuals often lack the maturity and knowledge to advocate for their rights or to recognize and resist unjust practices. Another significant concern is that work, especially full-time employment, can interfere with children’s education and personal development. It not only takes away valuable time from their studies and interests but also risks exhausting their young bodies, potentially leading to burnout, depression, or other health problems.

  1. Lexical resource

RevisedThe minimum age policy is particularly important for protecting younger individuals.

The preposition 'when it comes to' is not necessary in this context and can be removed for smoother reading.

  2. Lexical resource

RevisedAdditionally, many children lack financial literacy, making them vulnerable to manipulation by employers who may deceive them into accepting inadequate wages for their labor.

The term 'financially literate' is a bit formal and can be replaced with 'lack financial literacy' for a more natural tone.

  3. Lexical resource

RevisedFurthermore, early exposure to the workforce can foster a misguided focus on financial gain as a life priority, ultimately causing disillusionment and harm to their long-term well-being.

The term 'money-making' is a bit informal and can be replaced with 'financial gain'.

While some may argue for exceptions in cases of orphans or children from underprivileged families, many governments have established systems such as orphanages and financial aid programs to support these individuals without compromising their childhood or education.

  1. Coherence & cohesion

RevisedFor these reasons, the prohibition of children entering the workforce is crucial, and this policy should remain largely non-negotiable.

The sentence is slightly awkward and can be rephrased for better clarity.

On the other hand, the same level of care and attention is not always extended to the elderly, who often face significant challenges. While some might suggest that relatives can provide financial assistance, not everyone has family members who are willing or able to help. Consequently, elderly individuals may struggle to afford essentials such as food, utilities, and housing. Beyond financial issues, work can also provide elderly individuals with a sense of purpose and fulfillment, helping them overcome feelings of isolation or existential crisis. By engaging in meaningful work that aligns with their interests, older adults can lead happier and more satisfying lives.

  1. Grammar & accuracy

RevisedIn many parts of the world, pensions are insufficient to cover even basic needs, and those who have not been formally employed often are excluded from receiving such benefits altogether.

The adverb 'often' should be placed before the verb 'are' for correct word order.

  2. Grammar & accuracy

RevisedAllowing senior candidates to work can alleviate these financial burdens, and companies should therefore assess their applications more carefully.

The term 'greater consideration' is a bit formal and can be replaced with 'more carefully' for a more natural tone.

Elderly individuals often face significant financial and emotional challenges, and granting them opportunities to work can help address these issues while enabling them to lead more dignified and purposeful lives.

  1. Coherence & cohesion

RevisedIn conclusion, while it is crucial to maintain strict regulations to protect children from the potential harms of early employment, the applications of senior candidates should be carefully evaluated.

The use of 'vital' is a bit strong in this context and 'evaluated' could be replaced with a more suitable word.
