IELTS Writing Task 2 checker
Check an opinion, discussion, problem–solution or two-part essay. Axiom scores it on the four IELTS criteria and marks the sentences worth changing.
How a Task 2 essay is scored
Four criteria, each with its own band and its own explanation in the report.
- Task Response
- Whether you answer every part of the question, hold a clear position, and support it with relevant ideas.
- Coherence and Cohesion
- One central idea per paragraph, and linking that guides the reader without repeating itself.
- Lexical Resource
- Precise, natural vocabulary for the topic, with few repetitions and errors.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Complex sentences used well, and how many sentences are error-free.
Answers under 250 words lose marks for Task Response, so a live word count shows the target as you write.
Writing a report or a letter? The Task 1 checker uses the same criteria, with Task Achievement in place of Task Response.
Questions
Is Axiom’s band the same as an IELTS result?
No. Axiom’s bands are AI estimates on the four criteria IELTS examiners use: Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Only an IELTS test awards a real band. Use the estimate to see where your writing loses marks and what to change.
What do I get besides the band?
Each criterion comes with an explanation of its band. Axiom quotes sentences from your essay, shows a revised version and explains the change, and adds suggestions for the task and for how your ideas connect. You can download the report as a PDF.
How long does a check take?
You can watch each step while Axiom reads your essay, scores the four criteria and saves the report. If you close the page, marking carries on and the report appears in Your reports.
Can I check a handwritten essay?
Yes. Upload a photo of the page (up to 1 MB) and Axiom turns it into text that you can correct before you submit it.
