Task 2367 words

The only way to improve safety on our roads is to give much stricter punishments for driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people believe that the best way to make roads safer is to impose much stricter punishments on those who break traffic laws. While harsher penalties may help to reduce dangerous driving to some extent, I believe that other measures, especially improving road infrastructure and driver education, are more effective in the long term.

  1. Lexical resource

RevisedRoad safety has become a major concern in many countries due to the persistent injuries and fatalities caused by traffic accidents.

This revision simplifies the sentence and makes it more direct, which can improve clarity and readability.

Heavy fines, longer driving bans, and even prison sentences for serious violations such as drunk driving or reckless speeding may make drivers think more carefully before breaking the law. In addition, fear of punishment can encourage people to follow traffic regulations more responsibly. As a result, stricter laws may reduce the number of accidents caused by careless or dangerous drivers.

  1. Coherence & cohesion

RevisedOn the one hand, one potential benefit of stricter punishments is that they can discourage people from committing driving offences.

This revision provides a more explicit statement of the point being made, improving the overall clarity and coherence of the essay.

Many people develop bad driving habits or forget important traffic rules after receiving their licenses. Periodic tests could help drivers refresh their knowledge, improve their skills, and become more aware of road safety. This would be particularly useful for elderly drivers or those who have committed repeated offences.

  1. Coherence & cohesion

RevisedHowever, it is important to note that punishment alone cannot completely solve the problem.

This revision provides a smoother transition to the contrasting point, improving the overall cohesion of the essay.

  2. Lexical resource

RevisedAnother potential solution is to mandate regular driving tests for all drivers.

This revision provides a more formal and precise expression of the idea.

In many areas, accidents occur because of poor road conditions, unclear signs, inadequate lighting, or badly designed intersections. Governments should invest in better roads, clearer traffic systems, pedestrian crossings, and cycling lanes to reduce risks for all road users. Modern technology such as smart traffic lights and surveillance systems could also help prevent accidents and improve traffic flow.

  1. Grammar & accuracy

RevisedIn my opinion, the most crucial step towards improving road safety is enhancing road infrastructure.

This revision provides a more precise and emphatic expression of the idea.

  2. Grammar & accuracy

RevisedEven careful drivers may be in danger if the roads are unsafe, therefore, infrastructure development should be a top priority.

This revision provides a more formal and academic expression of the idea.

In conclusion, although stricter punishments can help reduce driving offences by discouraging irresponsible behaviour, they are not the only answer. Regular driving tests and, most importantly, improved road infrastructure are likely to have a greater impact on road safety. Therefore, I partly agree that harsher punishments are necessary, but I believe a combination of different measures is the most effective solution.
