The only way to improve safety on our roads is to give much stricter punishments for driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some people believe that imposing harsher punishments for driving offenses is the only effective solution to this issue. While stricter penalties may help reduce dangerous driving behaviors, I disagree that this is the only way to improve road safety, as regular driving tests and better road infrastructure can also play significant roles. Drivers may become more careful if they know they could face heavy fines, license suspension, or even imprisonment for dangerous actions such as speeding or drunk driving. For example, in some countries, severe penalties for using mobile phones while driving have successfully reduced accident rates. Therefore, strict laws can act as a strong deterrent and improve public safety. However, punishment alone is not enough to solve the problem. Many people develop bad driving habits over time or forget important traffic regulations after receiving their licenses. Periodic tests could help drivers refresh their knowledge and improve their driving skills. Elderly drivers, in particular, may benefit from medical and practical examinations to ensure that they are still capable of driving safely. Consequently, regular assessments could prevent accidents caused by careless or unskilled driving. Poorly maintained roads, unclear traffic signs, and inadequate street lighting often contribute to accidents regardless of driver behavior. Governments should invest in wider roads, safer pedestrian crossings, better traffic signals, and proper lighting systems. In addition, constructing separate lanes for bicycles and motorcycles could reduce collisions between different types of vehicles. In conclusion, although stricter punishments can help reduce traffic offenses by discouraging reckless behavior, they are not the only solution to improving road safety. Regular driving tests and especially better road infrastructure are equally, if not more, important in creating safer roads for everyone.
