The graph below shows the percentage of female members of parliament in five European countries from 2000 to 2012.
The line graph illustrates the proportion of female members of parliament in five different countries between 2000 and 2012.
Coherence & cohesion
RevisedOverall, Germany recorded the highest proportion of female members of parliament on the graph, but it did not maintain its leading position by the end of the period.
The use of 'and' in the original sentence is not appropriate as it does not convey the contrast between the two clauses. The revised sentence uses 'but' to show the contrast.
Coherence & cohesion
RevisedItaly had the lowest figure, but it experienced a considerable increase and reached the same level as the UK by the end of the period.
The use of 'with' after 'experienced' is not necessary and makes the sentence awkward. The revised sentence removes 'with' for a more natural flow.
In 2000, Germany had the highest proportion figure of female members of parliament compared with other countries, at just over 30% and it reached around 32% by the following four years. Spain had the second-highest figure on the graph with around 28% and its percentage increased noticeably until 2004 to around 36% before it declines slowly to 35% in 2008 same as Belgium. The figure for Spain declined slightly to exactly 35% by the end of the period.
Coherence & cohesion
RevisedAfter 2004, its figure remained stable at around 32% by the end of the period.
The use of 'stayed' is not appropriate in this context. 'Remained' is a more suitable verb to describe the stability of the figure.
On the other hand, Belgium’s figure stood at 24% in 2000 and it rose considerably to 35% by the following 4 years. The proportion of female members in Belgium remained unchanged until 2008. By the end of the period, the percentage stood at 23% percentage same as UK.
